This brass plaque is on the south wall of the nave of Ely Cathedral. A further bronze plaque on the exterior of the east end of Great St Mary’s church in Cambridge for the men of Cambridgeshire. A combined list from both memorials is available.

[On Cambridgeshire South African War Memorial] Private 2196, 1st Battalion, The Suffolk Regiment. Commemorated on the Suffolk Memorial, Suffolk Hill, Colesburg. Killed in action 6th January 1900 at Suffolk Hill.

BROWN

Private 36299, 9th Imperial Yeomanry, died of disease, 26-1-1902, Heilbron.

CAWTHORN

Bombardier 17623, Royal Field Artillery died of disease on 19 April 1902 at Elandsfontein while serving with the 27th Mounted Infantry.

James CHASE

Hon. Lt and Qtr. Master, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. Died of disease, Modder River, 3rd February 1900, age 41. Born July 1858, Warrant Officer for 6 years and obtained his commission in the Scots Guards in May 1891. Served in Egyptian Expedition 1882 (medal and bar, Khedives (bronze) star), present at the action at Mahuta, and the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. Accompanied his battalion to South Africa in October 1899 and served with it up to the time of his death. Buried in Ely Cemetery, Cambridgeshire. See also Ely Cemetery

Private 3339, 1st Suffolk Rgt, died of disease, 30-12-1900, Aliwal North. Born circa 1872, son of Edward & Cecilia DAW. Father a Staff Sgt. in the Cambs Militia, family living in Ely in 1881.

Private, Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry, killed in action Spion Kop, South Africa 24/1/1900 age 22. Son of Stephen & Jane Frost of Benwick. Also commemorated on the Doddington War Memorial.

Corporal 7949, 3rd Grenadier Guards, died of disease, 8-6-1901, Navalsport. Born circa 1876, son of John B and Susannah M JESSOP. Father was a Police Officer, family living in Wisbech in 1881.

Father was a Policeman, family living in Thorney in 1881.

Sapper 28509, 8th Coy (Railway) Royal Engineers, died of disease, 3-5-1900, Bloemfontein. Listed in the 1881 census as Asa Thomas. Born circa 1871, son of Thomas & Lucy PARNELL. Father Ag. Lab., family living in Stretham in 1881.
