Arthur John

15652, Private, 1st Battalion the Devonshire Regiment. Born in South Hill in 1898 the son of George and Elizabeth (nee Snow) Chubb of Higher Kernick Cottage. He enlisted at Lifton, Devon. He was Killed in Action on 24th July 1916 aged 18 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, pier/face 1C, France.

COLLINS

Gerald Thurstan Cole

Lieutenant, Royal Navy – HMS Tipperary. Born in St Columb Major in 1890 the son of Thursan and Ellen Muad (nee Fenwick) of Newton Ferrers, Callington. He was commissioned as a Midshipman in the RN on 15th January 1907, then prompted to Sub-Lieutenant on 15th April 1910. He was Killed in Action (one of 150 men of a crew of 197) when the vessel was sunk at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. Brother of Percival below. He was aged 25 and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, panel 8.

COLLINS

Percival George Frederick

Alias Percival George Collins. Lieutenant, 6th (Service) Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in 1892. He commissioned in the Coldstream Guards before being transferred to the DCLI. Brother of Gerald above. He was Killed in Action on 18th August 1916 aged 24 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, pier/face 6B, France. CWGC – source regarding ‘alias’.

ELLIOTT

Eustace Trehane

2nd Lieutenant, 9th (Reserve) Battalion the East Yorkshire Regiment, attached to the 8th Battalion. Born in Smeaton, Pillaton in 1885 the son of James Edward and Catherine (nee Trehane) Elliott of 17 Tavistock Road, Callington. He originally enlisted into the 2nd/4th Battalion DCLI (TF) before gaining his commission. After his officer training he returned to France on 9th April 1917. He was Killed in Action on the 10th April 1917 aged 32 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, bay 4 & 5, France.

HOCKING

William

Flight Sub-lieutenant, Royal Naval Air Service –Naval Air Station Killingholme, (Lincolnshire). Born in Camborne in 1893 the son of Reverend Richard and Frances Elizabeth Margaret (nee Rodd) Hocking of the rectory, Pillaton. In 1911 he was an apprentice in the Mercantile Marine. He was killed on 21st April 1916 aged 23, in a flying accident while flying a Sopwith Baby Seaplane (No 8155) which crashed into the river Humber. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, panel 18.

Charles Ambrose

G/23873, Private, 8th (Service) Battalion the Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Born in Pillaton in 1896 the son of Charles and Elizabeth Ann (nee Hodge) of Rowse Farm, Pillaton. He enlisted in Callington. He died of Wounds on 24th May 1917 aged 21 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, grave No XII.B.16, Belgium.
