Percy’s brother Private 1262 William George Adams, 14th Cyclist Battalion, Army Cyclist Corps also served having originally been a member of The Buffs. It would seem feasible that Percy had enlisted with Frederick Nelson Wood a brother of Lydd casualty William Wood as they both served in the same battalion with a mere six digits between their Regimental numbers. By the end of the war 227 officers and 5274 other ranks had served in Percy’s battalion and of these, 1103 fell.

The Zeebrugge Raid

It would appear that Roy’s demise can be attributed to the Zeebrugge Raid when H.M.S. Vindictive was used as an assault ship. Captain Edward Bamford who led the assaulting Royal Marine Light Infantry from Roy`s ship was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part played in the raid (one of eight awarded in this action). Several of the two hundred men that died on the raid are buried or commemorated in St James Cemetery, Dover. Roy was probably a member of the 4th Battalion RMLI. He was probably seriously wounded in the assault but somehow managed to be recovered to the UK where he sadly sucumbed to his wounds shortly afterwards.

ZEEBRUGGE HEROES.
IMPRESSIVE; FUNERALS.

Dover was the scene of the most impressive ceremony of the war on Saturday, when the bodies of the naval brigade who had been killed in the supreme attack on Zeebrugge wero buried. In some cases relatives of the dead heroes preferred that their loved ones should rest in their native graveyards, and in different parts of Kent historic funerals have taken place.

The funeral procession at Dover, which made its way along the sea front to the cemetery of St. James's, was lined with several hundred naval, Royal Marine and military officers, detachments of men from the fleet and parties from all regiments and corps in the town including members of the Women's Naval and Military Auxiliary Services. Wonderful wreaths covered the naval and motor lorries which bore the heroes to their last resting place and the densely lined streets bore testimony to the way in which British hearts were touched by the sublime gallantry of these sailor men. The commander of the Zeebrugge expedition, Sir Roger Keyes, and Captain Carpenter, of the Vindictive, were present and aircraft patrolled above, whilst the service was being conducted by eleven chaplains. At the conclusion of the service the "Last Post" was sounded.

The funeral of Stoker John Coxhedge, a Faversham man who died of wounds received in the naval operation last week, took place on Monday afternoon at the borough cemetery, with naval and military honours. The flag at the Town Hall was flown at half mast and there was a great gathering at the cemetery, amongst these present being the Mayor (Dr. Alexander] and the Deputy Mayor (Alderman Charles Holmes). Eight naval men acted as bearers (all local men who were home on leave) and a contingent of the Royal Defeneo Corps fired three volleys over the grave. The Rev. W. Owen, vicar of the Brentsa, officiated. There were floral tributes from the deceased's comrades and companions.

The funeral of Private George Parks, aged nineteen, of 2, Marshall-street, Folkestone, of the R.M.L.I., who was one of the Zeebrugge heroe,- took place with full military honours at Folkestone on Tuesday. The gun carriage, band and a firing party were provided by the Canadians, and a strong muster of troops and boy scouts followed. A party of Royal Marines and Bluejackets also attended to pay their last respects to their dead comrade. The service was conducted by the Rev. C. Brook, curate of St. Saviour's. There were a large number of floral tributes.

The funeral at Herne Bay on Monday afternoon of Stoker Sydney Alfred Nicholls, who lost his life in the raid on Zeebrugge and Ostend, was very imposing. Every honour was paid. Representatives of the Council were present; also Navy and Army veterans, while in the long procession, which was headed by the band of the Durham Light lufantry, were military, Volunteers and Fire Brigade. School children lined part of the route. The Rev. T. U. Groves conducted the burial service.

On Monday the funeral of Private Roy Monfred Adams, of the R.M.L.L, who was one of the crew of the famous "Vindictive," took place with full military honours at Lydd. The gallant soldier was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Adams, of Icehouse Cottage, Lydd, and only eighteen years old. He enlisted on the 5th of February, 1917. and was the youngest to volunteer. The body was placed on a gun carriage, the firing party consisting of men of his own battalion. The principal mourners were the mother, father and sister, and other members and relations of the family. There also followed a detachment from the Royal Naval Wireless Station, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Garrison Artillery. The funeral service took place at the Wesleyan Chapel the Rev. Mr. Vernon officiating. In his address the reverend gentleman spoke of the deceased as having been one of their Sunday school scholars, whom they all had liked. He also mentioned that he had received a letter from the deceased's commanding officer testifying to the heroism of all the men of the R.M.L.I. who were engaged in the landing on the Mole, as they had to make three attempts before they were successful. The wreaths were very numerous and as follows: from officers and men of the Royal Marines at Lydd, with regimental colours, Mr. J. T. Goble and employees, Mum, Dad, and family, Lydd County Schools (two wreaths), the Wesleyan Sunday school teachers, Aunt, Uncle, and family at Boulderwall, Cousin Jack, Aunt, Undo, and family at Brookland, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Haisell, Mrs. Haisell and family, Mrs. A. Balcomb, Mrs. Brighton and Mrs. Pope, Mrs. Read and Miss Jones.

Petty Officer Stoker 276783, Royal Navy. H.M.S “Hawke”. Died 15th October 1914. No known grave. Commemorated on Chatham Naval Memorial, Chatham, Kent. Panel reference 4.

H.M.S Hawke was sunk in the North Sea off Aberdeen by the German submarine U9 commanded by Otto Weddingen. Although 71 men were rescued about 500 souls perished.

H.M.S Hogue was one of three ships torpedoed in a short space of time on 22nd September 1914 by the German submarine U9 commanded by Otto Weddigen. There were more casualties in this disaster than in the whole Battle of Trafalgar! A truly disasterous day for the Royal Navy…

Note: HMS Collingwood was a St Vincent Class Dreanought Battleship built by Vickers, Barrow, laid down February 1908, completed April 1910, cost £1,680,888. Durijng World War 1 she was with the 1st Battle Squadron Grand Fleet, where HRH The Duke of York, later King George VI, served as a lieutenant on her. She was present at the Battle of Jutland (may 31st - 1st June 1916) and fired 84 12in rounds, receiving no damage. She was transferred to 4th Battle Squadron and in December 1922 sold for scrap.

Note: The 1901 census shows a 10 year David LAING living with his widower father (also David) at Middle Ripe, Lydd. David probably died of wounds after the Great War had ended. HMS India an armed merchant cruiser was sunk by the U 22 commanded by Bruno Hoppe at Bodo, West Fjord off the coast of Norway. Two of William`s brothers also went to sea in the war serving on tugs of the Royal Naval Reserve, Joseph Holbrook Oiller aboard the 192 ton RNRT “Warrior”. The Oiller’s are very long established Kent fisherman. Over the years there have been many Oiller’s serving aboard the various South Kent RNLI lifeboats.

Noel Lemuel

27 May 1904 to 31 March 1950 who served in the RMLI. He was born in Lydd. His unusual middle name is often rendered as Samuel, and so it was on the Royal Marines Register of Service: see CH/22585 - Also No known grave. Buried in WOODLANDS CEMETERY, Gillingham, Medway Unitary Authority, Kent.

Noel Lemuel Adams, son of Arthur Adams and Ada Kate née Marshall, was born at Lydd on 27 May 1904 and baptized at All Saints, Lydd on 10 Jul 1904. He enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Chatham (CH/22585) on 22 April 1919. In 1925 he married Nellie Frances Stangroom, and they had seven children. On 31 March 1927 Noel signed on to the Royal Navy for 12 years, and qualified as a Cook.

At the age of just 45 years, Noel Lemuel Adams died at home at 55 Gads Hill, Gillingham on 31 March 1950. The causes of death were carcinoma of the lung and mitral cardiac disease. The informant was his eldest son, Denis. Noel Lemuel Adams was buried at Woodlands Cemetery, Gillingham on 6 April 1950.
