Height 5 feet 11½ inches, girth 36½ inches, complexion medium dark, eyes brown, hair dark brown, religion Wesleyan. Son of William P. and E. A. Atkinson, of North Duffield, Selby, Yorks. Edward Butler

Lance Corporal 14375, 12th Battalion, Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment). Died of wounds 24th July 1916 in France & Flanders. Aged 22. Born Rochdale, enlisted Escrick. Husband of Hilda Scott, of Sand Lane Gates, Barlby, nr. Selby, Yorks. Adopted son of Edmund and Eliza Ward of Blackwood Farm North Duffield (Eliza was formerly a cook at Blackwood Hall in 1881 and married John Penrose of Blackwood (house) farm). Johns death she married Edmund Ward of Cawood. Edward came to the village about 1901, aged 8, and would have attended the old school until about aged 12 in 1905. He would have worked with the Wards until Edmund fell off his horse in 1914. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). Buried in CORBIE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot 1. Row G. Grave 22.

Lc.-Corpl. Edward Scott, 12th West Yorkshire Regiment, of Berlby, who was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field, died in France on July 24th, 1916, from wounds received in action on July 22nd, and the Military M<edal was handed by Lieut.-General Sir John Maxwell, Commander-in-Chief, Northern Command, last week to his widow, Mrs. Scott, who was accompanied by her little daughter, Miss Eileen Scott. Mrs. Scott requested that the medal should be presented to her duaghter, whereupon the General pinned the decoration on the baby's breast, afterwards shaking hands with Mrs. Scott and congratulating her onthe honour her late husband had so worthily won. Lc.-Corp. Scott was the adopted son of the late Mr. Edmund Ward, late of Blackwood Farm, South Duffield, and of Mrs. Ward, 1, Stone Lea, Green Lane, Selby, and enlisted on Sept. 8th, 1914, in the New Army.
